About the workshop: The workshop is a 2-hour overview of what it takes to learn ANY language. Jamila will review how to:

  • Set language goals, find culturally responsive language resources, and establish a language routine,
  • Decolonize your language journey,
  • DIY strategies for practicing listening comprehension, speaking & pronunciation, reading and writing, and
  • How to ACTUALLY become "fluent" in 12 - 18 months.

The workshop will be facilitated in English/Black English. While the workshop will cover strategies universal for all language learners, language-specific examples will only be provided for those learning Spanish, French, and Portuguese.

Who is this for: The workshop is designed for individuals proficient in English who are interested in learning Spanish, French, or Portuguese. It is also specifically designed for people who are interested or curious about language learning from an abolitionist, decolonial, and pro-Black/Indigenous perspective.

Accessibility Info/Requests: The workshop will be facilitated in English. Interpretation will be provided upon request for participants with the following dominant languages (i.e., languages they use more):  ASL, French, Portuguese, Spanish. Jamila is a hearing, sighted language coach with experience learning spoken languages as a hearing and sighted person. While many of the insights shared in the workshop (especially re: reading and writing) include strategies that could be beneficial for Deaf & DeafBlind language learners, the workshop has been designed based on Jamila's lived and professional experience as a hearing and sighted person. Requests must be received by Sunday, December 3, 2023 at 11:59 pm.

#TranslateTheMovement: For interested participants who can do so, please consider making a suggested donation of $60 (one-time) or commit to becoming a #TranslateTheMovement year-long monthly donor for $5/month. Jamila is donating her labor and time. Donations will help cover any cost needed for interpreters and/or to help resource the #TTM campaign for Black/African/Indigenous-led movement work in need of free and low-cost language support.
